That was no match for the swan song of its former companion series, the
obsessive-compulsive personality disorder detective dramedy Monk, which bowed out in December 2009 with 9.43 million tuned in — 3.2 million in the demo — and held the record for most-watched cable drama telecast until AMC’s The Walking Dead came along and smashed all cable drama ratings records. More recently, about 5 million tuned in to the premiere telecast of the Burn Notice series finale in September 2013, which marked that show’s biggest audience in more than a year.
Last night’s Psych episode, titled “The Break-Up”, also drew 908,000 viewers in the adults 18-49 demo.

Immediately after the finale, USA aired a live Psych After Pshow — an hourlong discussion in front of a live studio audience in Los Angeles. Kevin Pereira (Attack of the Show) hosted Psych creator Steve Franks and the cast; it also served as a reunion of sorts as Psych wrapped shooting late last summer.
Just last month, USA Network formally announced that the eighth season of Psych would be its last and last night its series finale. Psych was one of cable’s top five series Wednesday nights in 2013 among adults 18-49 (1.87 million) and total viewers (4.17 million) and was among the year’s top 10 Wednesday night series in adults 25-54 (1.86 million) and 18-34 (898,000). Back when the announcement was made, Jeff Wachtel, President and Chief Content Officer at NBCU Cable Entertainment, eulogized: “Psych is one of those rare projects that broke into the cultural mainstream. Its wild energy, fearless fun and engaging characters delivered an unrivaled series that will continue to be loved by fans for as long as there are ways to watch TV.”
Psych‘s end was not a surprise, and several cast members already have moved on, including Timothy Omundson, who has booked a lead role in ABC’s comedy pilot Galavant.
